Kerroc’h lighthouse: the story of an unusual lighthouse
Built entirely of granite, 12 meters high and topped by three statues representing sacred Christian figures, the Kerroc’h lighthouse is a special lighthouse, not to be missed when sightseeing in Morbihan.
Also known as the “Kerroc’h tower”, this lighthouse looks more like a religious edifice than a maritime navigation tool, and with good reason! Built during the second half of the XIXᵉ century, the Kerroc’h lighthouse’s primary purpose was to watch over and bless boats setting out to fish in Morbihan waters, not to guide them.
The initial project was to build a simple statue of the Virgin Mary, but the desire to create a larger, more majestic monument soon arose, explaining the height of the lighthouse and the three statues. Located in Ploemeur, the Kerroc’h lighthouse is more precisely the emblem of the small commune of Ploubazlanec, where those who initiated and encouraged its construction lived.
