Brest, the story of the end of the world
Inhabited by the Romans as early as the 3rd century, Brest was long responsible for defending the entrance to the English Channel. The Sourdéac Bastion still bears witness to this history. Raised to the status of a city by Henri IV in 1593, Brest has seen a turbulent history down the centuries. It has shaped the face of this unique city. Indeed, it was completely destroyed by aerial bombardment to dislodge German troops holed up in the submarine base during the Second World War. It took 14 years to rebuild Brest, and a dynamic new city was born.
